Large number of St Nicholas payments processed
03-12-2007
Last weekend the Netherlands made its St Nicholas* purchases en masse.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all very busy. Saturday, 2 December was the busiest day, with a total of 7,008,675 online bank card, giro card or credit card payments being processed. The amount of payments peaked between 2.30 p.m. and 3 p.m., when Equens Nederland processed no less than 277 transactions per second. Sunday 3 December was also substantially busier than usual, with approximately 45 % more electronic payments than is customary on a normal Sunday.
On Saturday and Sunday a total of approximately 8.6 million payments were processed. This is almost 9% more than the 7.9 million processed during the St Nicholas weekend of 2005.
The highest ever number of payments was processed on Friday 23 December 2005, shortly before Christmas, when Equens achieved the all-time record of almost 8 million processed transactions. The peak record dates from Saturday 24 December 2005, when no less than 298 transactions were processed per second during peak times. We expect to break both records again during the Christmas period.
* St Nicholas is a traditional Dutch feast-day.
